How to Get Deep Plum Velvet Nails at Home
Dark plum that looks almost black until the light hits it, then a soft shimmer shows up under the gloss. Thin gold details do the Halloween part: a web, a crescent moon, a few stars and one small raven. It reads elegant rather than costume, and with the thumb left plain it carries on into Thanksgiving.
The colour story
The base is a deep aubergine, closer to black cherry than to bright purple. The shimmer is fine and soft, not glitter. The gold is antique rather than yellow, and it only ever sits in thin lines and dots so the plum stays the main colour.

Step by step
Prep
Push back cuticles, shape to a medium almond, and lightly buff the shine off the nail plate, including the free edge. Brush off the dust, wipe with rubbing alcohol or a nail dehydrator, and let the nail dry completely.
Base coat
Brush on a thin layer and cap the free edge. Keep it off the skin and cuticles. If a coat feels hot, take your hand out and finish the cure in short passes.
Cure 60–90 sRoyal Plum, 2 coats
Apply Royal Plum in two thin coats, capping the free edge, and cure after each one. Dark gel needs thin coats or it wrinkles.
Cure 60–90 s per coatVelvet coat
Roll the cat-eye bottle between your palms for 20–30 seconds. Paint one thin coat of Mystic Plum and cap the free edge. Hold the magnet about 3–5 mm above the nail and move it slowly back and forth for 5–10 seconds so the shimmer spreads instead of making a stripe. Magnet one nail at a time and put it under the lamp straight away.
Cure 60–90 sGold details
Wipe most of the gold off the brush. On the index nail, pull five or six thin spokes from one corner, then join them with short curved threads for the web. On the ring nail, paint a small crescent moon and two or three tiny four-point stars. On the pinky, add a scatter of gold dots. Leave the thumb plain.
Cure 60–90 sBranch and raven
On the middle nail, draw a thin gold branch with a few small leaves and cure it. Then paint a small raven on the branch with the black liner: an oval body, a smaller round head and a short tail. Keep it small.
Cure 60 sGlossy top coat
Seal every nail with the no-wipe top coat, with a little extra in the centre so the shine looks deep, and cap the edges. Do not wipe this coat after curing. A SUNUV lamp may need less time, and the instructions on the bottle win.

Pro tips
- Keep the magnet moving. A still magnet makes a sharp line. Slow movement gives the soft velvet look.
- One motif per nail. Web, raven, moon, dots. Two motifs on one nail start to look busy on a dark base.
- Thin gold lines. Wipe the liner brush on the bottle neck before every stroke. Thick gold looks heavy and can wrinkle.
- Thumbs flat in the lamp. A tilted thumb sits in the shadow of the lamp and can stay under-cured. Cure thumbs flat, or cure them on their own.
- Patch-test first. Gel can cause allergies. Keep it off your skin and cuticles, and stop if you get itching or redness.
FAQ
Do I need the cat-eye layer?
Royal Plum on its own gives a glossy plum crème. The Mystic Plum cat-eye layer adds the soft shimmer you see in the photo. If you skip it, the gold details still work.
Can I make it less Halloween?
Yes. Skip the web and the raven, keep the moon, the stars and the gold dots, and it works through Thanksgiving and the rest of the fall.
How long does it last, and how do I remove it?
With good prep and thin, fully cured layers, expect about 2–3 weeks. To remove, lightly buff the shine off the top coat, soak a cotton pad in acetone, and wrap each nail in foil for at least 15 minutes. Then gently push the gel off. If it still holds, soak for another 5 minutes. Never peel it.
