How to Get Grey Modern French Nails at Home

Difficulty: Beginner-friendlyTime: 45 minWear: 2–3 weeks

A classic French, with the white swapped for a soft cool grey. The tip stays thin, so it looks modern rather than heavy, and grey goes with silver, gold and everything in a neutral wardrobe.

The colour story

The nude is sheer and pink-peach. The tip is a mid, cool grey with no blue or brown in it, about 1.5 to 2 mm deep, following the almond shape.

Step by step

  1. Prep

Push back cuticles, shape to a medium almond, and lightly buff the shine off the nail plate, including the free edge. Brush off the dust, wipe with rubbing alcohol or a nail dehydrator, and let the nail dry completely.

  2. Base coat

Brush on a thin layer and cap the free edge. Keep it off the skin and cuticles. If a coat feels hot, take your hand out and finish the cure in short passes.

    Cure 60–90 s
  3. Sheer nude, 2 coats

Apply two thin coats of sheer nude, capping the free edge, and cure after each one. The nail should look glassy, not opaque.

    Cure 60 s per coat
  4. Grey tip

Wipe most of the grey off the brush. Paint a thin tip about 1.5–2 mm deep that follows the almond curve, starting at one side and pulling across to the other. Cap the free edge. Clean any wobble with a small brush dipped in alcohol before curing.

    Cure 60 s
  5. Second pass (if needed)

If the grey looks streaky, add one more thin pass on the tip only and cure again.

    Cure 60 s
  6. Glossy top coat

Seal every nail with the no-wipe top coat and cap the edges. Do not wipe this coat after curing. A SUNUV lamp may need less time, and the instructions on the bottle win.

    Cure 90–120 s

Pro tips

  • Thin is modern. Deep tips look like a classic salon French. Keep the grey to about 2 mm for the look in the photo.
  • Turn the hand, not the brush. Rotate your finger under a steady brush. The curve follows the nail more easily.
  • Match the sides. Start and end the tip at the same height on both sides, or the almond looks lopsided.
  • Thumbs flat in the lamp. A tilted thumb sits in the shadow of the lamp and can stay under-cured. Cure thumbs flat, or cure them on their own.
  • Patch-test first. Gel can cause allergies. Keep it off your skin and cuticles, and stop if you get itching or redness.

FAQ

Profound Gray or Whale Gray?

Profound Gray is the pick for this look. Whale Gray, in the alternatives, is another crème grey from the same Beetles line. Grey shades vary on screen, so check the listing photos.

Can I skip the sheer nude?

You can paint the tip on a bare nail over the base coat, but the nude evens out the nail and makes the tip look cleaner, as in the photo.

How long does it last, and how do I remove it?

With good prep and thin, fully cured layers, expect about 2–3 weeks. To remove, lightly buff the shine off the top coat, soak a cotton pad in acetone, and wrap each nail in foil for at least 15 minutes. Then gently push the gel off. If it still holds, soak for another 5 minutes. Never peel it.
