How to Get Soft Blue French Nails at Home

Difficulty: Beginner-friendlyTime: 45 minWear: 2–3 weeks

A short French in a soft, dusty baby blue. It is a small change from white tips that makes the set feel fresh, and short rounded nails keep it easy for every day.

The colour story

The nude is sheer and peachy. The blue is light and a little dusty, not bright. The tip is a crescent that is slightly deeper at the sides than in the middle.

Beetles No-Wipe Top Coat & Base Coat Set

    2 × 15 ml · glossy, no-wipe finish

The base coat helps the gel grip. The no-wipe top coat blends the tip into the nude and gives the glassy shine.

Gel polish can cause allergic reactions. Keep it off skin and cuticles, and patch-test first.

Beetles Nail Art Liner Brushes, 5 pcs

Step by step

  1. Prep

Push back cuticles, shape to a short round, and lightly buff the shine off the nail plate, including the free edge. Brush off the dust, wipe with rubbing alcohol or a nail dehydrator, and let the nail dry completely.

  2. Base coat

Brush on a thin layer and cap the free edge. Keep it off the skin and cuticles. If a coat feels hot, take your hand out and finish the cure in short passes.

    Cure 60–90 s
  3. Sheer nude, 2 coats

Apply two thin coats of sheer nude, capping the free edge, and cure after each one. The nail should look glassy, not opaque.

    Cure 60 s per coat
  4. Blue tip

Wipe most of the blue off the brush. Paint a crescent tip about 2 mm deep in the middle and a little deeper at the sides, following the round shape. Cap the free edge. Clean any wobble with a small brush dipped in alcohol before curing.

    Cure 60 s
  5. Second pass (if needed)

If the blue looks streaky, add one more thin pass on the tip only and cure again.

    Cure 60 s
  6. Glossy top coat

Seal every nail with the no-wipe top coat and cap the edges. Do not wipe this coat after curing. A SUNUV lamp may need less time, and the instructions on the bottle win.

    Cure 90–120 s

Pro tips

  • Short nails, thin tips. On short nails a deep tip eats the nail. Keep the blue to about 2 mm in the middle.
  • Turn the hand, not the brush. Rotate your finger under a steady brush. The smile line follows the nail more easily.
  • Pastel needs two passes. Light blue can look streaky in one coat. Two thin passes look smoother than one thick one.
  • Thumbs flat in the lamp. A tilted thumb sits in the shadow of the lamp and can stay under-cured. Cure thumbs flat, or cure them on their own.
  • Patch-test first. Gel can cause allergies. Keep it off your skin and cuticles, and stop if you get itching or redness.

FAQ

The blue looks brighter than the photo. Is that the right bottle?

Baby Blue is a light blue crème. On a thin tip under a glossy top coat it reads softer than in the bottle. Lighting and how thick you paint it change how bright it looks.

Can I do this on longer nails?

Yes. Keep the tip thin and follow the shape of your nail. The same two products work at any length.

How long does it last, and how do I remove it?

With good prep and thin, fully cured layers, expect about 2–3 weeks. To remove, lightly buff the shine off the top coat, soak a cotton pad in acetone, and wrap each nail in foil for at least 15 minutes. Then gently push the gel off. If it still holds, soak for another 5 minutes. Never peel it.
