How to Get Soft Lavender Swirl Nails at Home

Difficulty: Beginner-friendlyTime: 50 minWear: 2–3 weeks

Four soft lilac nails and one creamy accent with a loose lilac swirl. It is playful without being busy, and the swirl only takes a liner brush and a steady hand. The rest is one lilac crème, one white and a glossy top coat.

The colour story

The lilac is a muted lavender, soft rather than bright purple. The accent nail is a creamy white, and the swirl uses the same lilac as the other nails, so the set reads as one colour story.

Step by step

  1. Prep

Push back cuticles, shape to a medium almond, and lightly buff the shine off the nail plate, including the free edge. Brush off the dust, wipe with rubbing alcohol or a nail dehydrator, and let the nail dry completely.

  2. Base coat

Brush on a thin layer and cap the free edge. Keep it off the skin and cuticles. If a coat feels hot, take your hand out and finish the cure in short passes.

    Cure 60–90 s
  3. Lilac, 2 coats

Apply Lavender Haze to every nail except the ring nail, in two thin coats, capping the free edge. Cure after each coat.

    Cure 60 s per coat
  4. Cream accent, 2 coats

Paint the ring nail with French White in two thin coats, capping the free edge. White blocks the lamp, so keep the coats thin.

    Cure 60–90 s per coat
  5. Lilac swirl

Dip the liner brush in a little Lavender Haze and wipe it almost dry. Draw two or three loose S-curves from the cuticle side towards the tip, letting them run off the edge. Do not try for symmetry. For the white line, trace a hair-thin line beside each lilac curve with the white liner.

    Cure 60 s
  6. Glossy top coat

Seal every nail with the no-wipe top coat and cap the edges. Do not wipe this coat after curing. A SUNUV lamp may need less time, and the instructions on the bottle win.

    Cure 90–120 s

Pro tips

  • Loose beats perfect. A swirl looks best when the lines are relaxed. Pull the brush in one slow stroke rather than many short ones.
  • One accent nail. The photo uses a single swirl nail. Swirls on every nail turn soft into busy.
  • White needs a longer cure. Opaque white blocks light. Thin coats, 60–90 seconds each, or the accent nail wrinkles.
  • Thumbs flat in the lamp. A tilted thumb sits in the shadow of the lamp and can stay under-cured. Cure thumbs flat, or cure them on their own.
  • Patch-test first. Gel can cause allergies. Keep it off your skin and cuticles, and stop if you get itching or redness.

FAQ

Is the accent nail white or cream?

In the photo it reads as a soft cream. French White is a crème white, and under warm light and a glossy top coat it looks close. If you want it warmer, check Amazon for a cream or ivory shade you like.

What if I want it pinker?

Milky Taro, in the extras, is a pinker, milkier option. Amazon files it under a pink colour name, so check the listing before you buy.

How long does it last, and how do I remove it?

With good prep and thin, fully cured layers, expect about 2–3 weeks. To remove, lightly buff the shine off the top coat, soak a cotton pad in acetone, and wrap each nail in foil for at least 15 minutes. Then gently push the gel off. If it still holds, soak for another 5 minutes. Never peel it.
