How to Get Maple Leaf Micro Accent Nails at Home

Difficulty: Beginner-friendlyTime: 50 minWear: 2–3 weeks

A quiet fall manicure: your own nails, smoother and glossier, with one small maple leaf on the ring finger. It reads as autumn without going full pumpkin, so it works from October through Thanksgiving dinner.

The colour story

The base is a sheer peach-nude that lets the nail show through. The leaf is a warm burnt orange with a brown vein, small enough to read as a detail.

Step by step

  1. Prep

Push back cuticles, shape the nails, and lightly buff the shine off the nail plate, including the free edge. Brush off the dust, wipe with rubbing alcohol or a nail dehydrator, and let the nail dry completely.

  2. Base coat

Brush on a thin layer and cap the free edge. Keep it off the skin and cuticles.

    Cure 60–90 s
  3. Sheer nude, 2 coats

Apply two thin coats of sheer nude, capping the free edge, and cure after each one.

    Cure 60 s per coat
  4. The maple leaf

On the ring nail only, put a tiny bead of orange on the 5 mm brush. Paint a small dot in the middle of the nail, then pull five short points out of it: one up, two angled up, two out to the sides. Keep the leaf about 4 mm wide.

    Cure 60 s
  5. Vein and stem

Wipe the brush, pick up a trace of brown, and draw one hair-thin line from the base to the top point, plus a short stem below the leaf.

    Cure 60 s
  6. Glossy top coat

Seal every nail with the no-wipe top coat and cap the edges. Do not wipe this coat after curing. The instructions on the bottle win.

    Cure 90–120 s

Pro tips

  • Practise on foil. Paint three or four leaves on foil first. The dot-and-pull method gets easy quickly.
  • Less gel, sharper points. A loaded brush makes blobs. Wipe it almost dry before each point.
  • Thumbs flat in the lamp. A tilted thumb sits in the shadow of the lamp and can stay under-cured. Cure thumbs flat, or cure them on their own.
  • Patch-test first. Gel can cause allergies. Keep it off your skin and cuticles, and stop if you get itching or redness.

FAQ

Can I use a sticker instead of painting?

Yes. A small maple leaf nail sticker works the same way. Place it after the nude coats and seal it under two thin layers of top coat.

How long does it last, and how do I remove it?

With good prep and thin, fully cured layers, expect about 2–3 weeks. To remove, lightly buff the shine off the top coat, soak a cotton pad in acetone, and wrap each nail in foil for at least 15 minutes. Then gently push the gel off. If it still holds, soak for another 5 minutes. Never peel it.
